Anatomy of an Artwork #2: Remedios Varo, Sympathy (1955)
In Remedios Varo’s Sympathy we explore the anatomy of cat, woman and cosmic bonds. Sympathy or empathy? A surrealist search for tenderness.

What Lies Beyond What We See?
At first glance, Remedios Varo’s 1955 work Sympathy looks like a simple domestic scene. But when we look at the details, the woman’s tender touch on her cat seems to fill the room with energy. Full of surrealist details, the painting speaks of inner bonds, emotional resonance and the power of invisible connections.
Empathy or Sympathy?
The Spanish word simpatía can mean both sympathy and empathy. The woman understanding the cat, sharing its feeling and connecting with it evokes empathy more than anything. It is about more than “understanding” another’s feelings; it is about “feeling” them. She feels the emotion, but without losing herself in it, with a gentle awareness…
Are the Woman and the Cat Two States of the Same Soul?
Here the cat is not just an animal: it is the overflow of emotions, the symbol of instinct. The woman represents understanding and balance. But the two are not opposites; they complete each other. The pair shows how a person can accept the chaotic side within themselves with tenderness. Empathy is also a tenderness we direct towards ourselves.
What Cosmic Bond Do the Star Patterns Describe?
The geometric star patterns on the wall symbolise the invisible bond between people and the universe. The motif whispers that everything in the universe is connected. In Varo’s universe, emotions can align like stars.
What Feeling Does the Spilled Water Carry?
The water spilling from the glass is like an uncontrolled burst of emotion. But there is no crisis here, no blame. The woman only holds; she does not grasp. This attitude shows an overflow met with empathy: simply witnessing, without judging ourselves or others.
How Does Remedios Varo’s World Show in This Scene?
Remedios Varo herself loved cats; the resemblance between the faces of the woman and the cat turns this scene into a kind of double portrait. Perhaps it is an inner self-portrait in which the artist brings human and animal nature together. Simpatía is one of her doors into inner worlds.
Sympathy presents empathy not only as an interpersonal feeling but as a state of consciousness that unites all living beings in the universe. At a time when emotional bonds are fading in the modern world, Varo’s work reminds us of the magic of empathy. Sometimes a touch, a look or a small moment spent together can set invisible sparks in motion.
