A masked ball. In front, a woman sits with her face half covered by a mask while a man leans towards her; behind them stands a crowd in which faces and masks can no longer be told apart.
Goya gave this plate from Los Caprichos, the series he published in 1799, the title “Nobody knows himself”: here the mask does not hide a face; it asks who is wearing it.
