Kabuki, the dramatic and expressive face of Japanese theatre, comes back to life in the contemporary interpretation of Damla Tatlıdil (Jouska Brodery). In this work, hundreds of light-catching glass beads take the place of brushstrokes.

About the work

Starting from Utagawa Kunisada’s print of Kagekiyo and formed by glass beads sewn by hand onto linen, the relief surface presents the expression on the Kabuki actor’s mask as a shimmering experience that changes with the viewer’s angle. A three-dimensional dance of patience, precision and cultural aesthetics on glass and fabric.
