> From Kusama’s dots to Bourgeois’s cells, we explore the visual map art draws of anxiety and obsession. A journey through the labyrinth of the mind.

Some thoughts circle inside our heads like an inner voice that will not be quiet. Art keeps a visual record of these loops. Obsessions, repetitions, geometric fixations and a hunger for perfection are hidden sometimes in a brushstroke, sometimes in a knot. These works map the mind; but this map is not a straight road, it is an intricate labyrinth.

## Yayoi Kusama: the “Infinity Nets” series

Kusama’s nets, woven from endless repetitions, show that obsession has a language of its own. Each dot is like the trace of a mental repetition: soothing, yet at the edge of madness. For her, art is a form of therapy, and the endless nets are a way of coping with the chaos inside.

## Louise Bourgeois: the “Cells” series

With her “cellular” installations, Bourgeois builds the inner prisons of anxiety. Using glass, metal and fabric, she both protects and violates boundaries. Each structure is a material archaeology of suppressed memories.

## Adolf Wölfli: “Sankt Adolf-Giant-Creation”

Diagnosed with schizophrenia, Wölfli built his own universe by obsessively filling sheets of paper with writing, patterns and symbols. In this universe order is a tool of control and repetition is a refuge. Madness sometimes expresses itself through the most detailed architecture.

## Richard Dadd: “The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke” (1855 to 1864)

![Richard Dadd, The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke: a crowd of tiny fairy figures packed among blades of grass](https://artcycle.co/media/wp/2026/01/Richard-Dadd-–-The-Fairy-Fellers-Master-Stroke-1855–1864.jpg)

Dadd worked on this painting over and over for years, every detail at an almost microscopic level. Painted between paranoia and psychotic episodes, this fantastical scene tells the secret of mental collapse through its details. It is a world built from fragments by an artist whose mind was breaking apart.

## M.C. Escher: “Relativity” (1953)

![M.C. Escher, Relativity (1953): figures walking on staircases that run in different directions; lithograph](https://artcycle.co/media/wp/2026/01/M.C.-Escher-–-Relativity-1953.jpg)

Escher’s architecture tests the limits of logic by repeating the impossible. The mind gets stuck trying to understand the plane: every path connects to another, and there is no way out. It is obsession in its most mathematical form: a perfect trap.

## Marina Abramović: “Cleaning the Mirror” (1995)

![Marina Abramović, Cleaning the Mirror (1995): the artist scrubbing a skeleton in her lap with a brush](https://artcycle.co/media/wp/2026/01/Marina-Abramovic-–-Cleaning-the-Mirror-1995.jpg)

Through repetitive action, Abramović works with the tension between body and memory. The performance, in which she tries to scrub clean internal organs, is a symbolic ritual of purification. The roots of anxiety are like a traumatic memory inscribed in the body.

Inside our minds some paths repeat themselves, and some thoughts always lead to the same place. Artists make this endless loop visible, whether as a search for meaning or an effort to cope. Sometimes a pattern, sometimes a structure; but each one is like a light held up to the shadows of the mind…
