> “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” From Camus to Kahlo, we explore the aesthetics of being reborn from the places where we broke.

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” Albert Camus, “Return to Tipasa”

Spring is a metaphor not only for the seasons but also for the cycles of the spirit. As nature is reborn, people too sprout from the places where they broke. Every collapse is the shore of an inner transformation.

For Rollo May, creative courage is the courage to step into the unknown. The spring that blossoms within us is not only about nature; it is also about the self that passes through darkness and rebuilds itself.

## Frida Kahlo: The Broken Column (1944)

Telling of fragility and resistance through her own body, Kahlo represents her spine as a shattered column. This is a rebuilding that passes through pain. What is aesthetic takes shape through the courage to look at pain itself.

## Gustav Klimt: The Tree of Life (1909)

The tree of life represents the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The spirals of its branches recall the inner labyrinth of Jung’s process of individuation. The golden tones symbolise the radiance of the soul’s search.

## David Hockney: Spring Cannot Be Cancelled (2021)

Made during the pandemic, this work symbolises a return to nature after withdrawal and isolation. This time spring is not only outside; it is hidden in the individual’s return to life.

“Spring reminds us not of nature’s reawakening, but that a person can grow green again even from their most broken places.” To be reborn is not only a beginning; it is to carry on with hope even while bearing the weight of the past. As Jung put it, without darkness light cannot be recognised. Every spring that blossoms within us is the result of an inner courage.
